Hanover St Chophouse and Nero's bone
We've got a WICKED exciting new contest coming up on WZID. For the first time ever, we have a cool contest that asks you guys to finsh a TV commercial! We've got tons of information coming up this Monday, but last night we were guests at the Hanover Street Chophouse in Manchester. Owner Chuck Rolecek hosted me, Mikey, Bob Bronson and Tracy Caruso for a feast fit for a king. At the end of these fan-tabulous meal, I volunteered to take home the t-bone for Nero (our German Shepard). When I gave it to the handsome guy, he immediately got down to business, on the hardwood floor in the bedroom. So, I sat up, told him that he needed to take it into the other room as I couldn't sleep with his clunking and chomping...and, much to my complete surprise...he picked up his bone, and went to the porch to continue his feast. WOW. That was weird! Tune in this Monday morning for all the details!

Goat E. Goat 5/6/08
Some very sad news to share....you might have heard me talking about our goat, officially named Goat E. Goat (it said so on his vet records, too). Unfortunately, we lost Mr G. over the weekend. Apparently a coyote in the neighborhood couldn't resist, and made him into breakfast. We'll miss you, Goat E Goat.

April 11, 2008 the "mystery" plant
Several years ago (like maybe 9) my sister gave me this plant. It has long, smooth leaves on it, and she had sprinkled some other smaller, kind of clover-looking plants underneath it. I don't know what it is, but it has never flowered. Until this year. One day, out of the blue, I noticed the buds, and then, overnight...WOW

4/8/09 The sap's still running
The late-season start of maple sugaring has proven to be pretty productive for us - we've managed to get over a gallon of syrup so far, and with a lot fewer gallons of sap than originally thought. Someone asked us what grade syrup we had, and I have to say that its Grade X - for Experiment. It's delicious, and it's even better because we made it right here at the ranch!

Nice job, Top Docs for NH Magazine!
Last night, I had the pleasure of hosting NH Magazine's Annual Top Doctors Awards reception, at the Bedford Village Inn. I love this issue, on newsstands now, because it puts faces and stories behind the medical professionals that otherwise would be a list of names on our insurance plans. If you are looking for a new doctor, or perhaps seeking a specialist, this is one issue you should not miss - go to www.nhmagazine.com
|
Tapping out the trees
OK, we KNOW there are wayyy too many taps on this hapless little tree here - it's our first foray into maple sugaring, and this particular sugar maple must come down as it lives so close to the driveway, its buckling up the pavement. So, for its final spring, its giving us a very sweet treat! Our first sap boiling produced TWO whole ounces of syrup :)

March 28, 2008 So much for Spring
Wasn't it just a couple of days ago I was saying it was getting to be spring?! No turkeys courting in the barnyard today :( At least the barnyard looks less messy again....
|
3/27/08 Happy Birthday, Nero!
Nero is 11 years young today - the handsome stud!

Boy, I sure like Running Tractors!
Thanks to the generosity of my neighbors, I was able to push the snow banks & piles back to make room for the next storm's snow, and bring you another Nancy on a tractor video! Thanks again to my B.F. Wolf, who patiently took the video, while watching out for traffic & giving me pointers from the ground!
Just click on the pic below to see the video!

March 26, 2008 Signs of spring at the Ranch!
Ok. So, it was snowing out while I on my way to work this morning at 3:40 am. I am thinking, "oh, great, its still winter." Bummer. Well, what is the first thing I see this morning when I get home after my shift? Two Tom turkeys in full plumage strutting their stuff, trying to be the dominant Tom of the 17 hens patiently waiting around to see who this year's "man" is going to be! The photo also shows all the mess that the snow had so conveniently hid around the barn all winter. The NEED for the spring cleaning is another sure sign that spring is springing! So is mud season... :)

March 24, 2008
Did anyone get the make and model of the Easter bunny that made me eat so much food, drink and cake yesterday? Ugh. But it was nice visiting families this weekend, and it was encouraging that the spring birds were chirping and bulbs pushing up from the tundra in southern Massachusetts.

March 21, 2008 My New Sneakers
You can't miss me - I'm the one walking around with glowing white feet. To celebrate receiving my recent HIPPO "Best Of" Awards, I went out to Sam's Club and bought myself a new pair of sneakers, a bargain at $22! They are blinding white. You know the look - you see those feet coming a mile away. Maybe its not so obvious if you frequent the gym - I understand those people always have squeaky clean sneaks on. Not me; I have bets with my family how long I can keep these pearly whites out of the barn. Horses and new sneakers don't mix. These shoes remind me of my first visit to the beach in the summer. You can't help but notice my pale torso. And pasty white arms, all supported by a pair of anemic looking legs. I don't care what the swimsuit makers say, there is no color of bathing suit that helps hide the evidence of paltry winter skin. Nope, tanning booths are out - I keep the dermatologist's kids in college as it is. Maybe I should just keep my sneakers white, which just MAY make the rest of me look bohemian by comparison!
I always welcome your feedback! Please email me at nancyrobbins@wzid.com

3/20/08 Thanks, HIPPO READERS!!!
Heyyyy, I just learned something way cool...readers of the Hippo love my blog! It won "Best Locally Produced Pod-cast or Blog"
That's a very, very nice recognition. I am also very pleased to announce that my co-host, Mike Morin, won "Best Local Radio show Host"; our morning show won "Best Local Radio Show", and WZID won the "Best Local Radio Station"! Thanks so much for your votes, and thanks to the Hippo for hosting the awards forum: www.hippopress.com

The BK KING gets his own greeting cards????
Stop the presses!!! This is branding gone very silly. Burger King has signed a licensing agreement with Andrew McMell Publishing to develop a line of branded Burger King greeting cards featuring the company’s icon, the King. Promo magazine reports the collection will include six different greeting cards featuring the King’s “off beat” personality. (he has one?) The cards will be available at select retailers this summer. I actually have a picture of the KING in my studios; in it, it looks like he has some "special sauce" dribbling down his chin!

Nice job, Salon Aquavit!!!

The cat is weird...
"Squeaky" the cat has some big paws to fill. With the passing of my dog Skippy, Squeaky has taken over where Skippy left off. OK, I'll be honest: cats are cool, but dogs rule. Well, maybe that was the case pre-Squeaky. Over the summer, we adopted a cute, playful little kitten from the Animal Rescue League in Bedford.
Now, she is the one who greets me when I come home. Pre-Squeaky, Skippy was the resident trash can. Twelve years ago, when my son was born, Skippy helped me lose weight by eating my leftovers. Skippy took his job so seriously, we even developed a command, much like "sit", "paw", or "fetch". What was it? "Skippy Clean Up!" I am not kidding. If the baby dropped something on the floor, all we had to do is say those words. Skippy always came running, and always made a bee-line for whatever mess he needed to clean up. He took his job very seriously. So here comes Squeaky; she'll be a year old in May. Squeaky has learned "THE" command...its now "Squeaky Clean Up"! I can't help thinking that Skippy took the little fuzz ball aside before he died and said "Look kid, I don't know how, but you seem to be the one that will have to fill my paws. Good luck". Like Skippy, she eats everything that falls her way, even non-traditional animal fare like carrots, asparagus, and beans. She's a wicked good mouser, and takes great delight in devouring her catch. I recently caught her chowing down on a bag of tortilla chips. I can only assume she is craving the crunch she gets while on mouse patrol! (PHOTO: Squeaky, and her pal Nero, sharing some table scraps)

Getting ready for spring 2008
Can you blame me? WIth this winter we're still having, how can you NOT take solace in the seed catalogs? We got a good start on some basic seeds for the garden - soon, the porch will be full of little pots and odd tubs of dirt, water and...with a little luck...little green sprouting things that will turn into this year's gardens bumper crop!
|
1/08 Primary evils
Phew! They are gone. For now. The blur of presidential wannabees and the herd of media and PR folks that follow them around have beat feet. While watching the tube last night, (no not You-Tube, the boob-tube) we noticed we could actually scan through all 13 channels of my basic-er-than-basic tv service without coming across ONE political ad. Wow. We were bombarded with them for so many months; I remember seeing Bill Richardson in LAST year's Christmas parade (or was it the St Patrick's day parade - they both take place in horrible weather!!) I almost feel lonely without Mitt assuring me that he "approved this message"...ahhhh, NOT!

Go Pats!
So there IS something worth looking forward to during this long, impossible winter...the Patriots! What a great time to be a New England sports fan....the Sox, the Celtics...even the Bruins are doing pretty good this year! But if you are the type of gal who is more of a sports participant instead of a fan, you may want to check out the Manchester Freedom Women's football team: the http://www.manchesterfreedom.com/ They're also looking for sponsors, so if you want a unique way to show your community support, look them up!

1/4/08 Dog-gone Daze
Today's the first anniversary of the day my precious little dog Buffalo died. It's hard to believe that a whole year has gone by, but sadly, I lost another member of the family at the end of 2007, too. On Thanksgiving day, Skippy joined his pals Buffalo and Dukie in the big backyard in the sky. All three of my dogs had been part of my family for at least 11 years; Skippy had been by my side for 13 1/2 years. Over the holidays, my son and I dusted off some of the old 8mm movies in the basement, and I found one of Skippy. My son is 12; Skippy came into my life at the age of 5 weeks old. It's amazing how much of an impact that animals have on our lives...though my son didn't remember Skippy as a puppy (well, Skippy was a year and a half old when he was born!) he was quick to point out those little endearing qualities he saw in the puppy that he remembers in the adult dog. So the house is a lot more quiet these days without the clacking of toenails on the hardwood floors, or the warning bark when someone pulls in the driveway, but I know we are in a transitional period. I don't know when, or what kind of a four-legged friend will next bring themselves into our lives, but I know that they will find us - and we'll be ready.

12/26/07 Time for some R&R
Guess I'm getting old...the "R&R" in the headline isn't rock-n-roll, but "rest and relaxation". hmmmmm, hope everyone had a fantastic holiday, and best wishes for a happy New Year! Be back with you on January 3rd!

The Annual WZID Radiothon
Time flies, especially around the holidays! Here we are again, just a day away from the annual WZID Radiothon. We've already gotten a tremendous start - yesterday's Barry Manilow in Vegas trip added $3,000 to the cause. So what IS the cause? Well, the beneficiaries of your generosity are kids you probably will never meet. The families served by Child and Family Service of NH are local NH families - kids who may play with your own kids at school. Their parents don't advertise that times are hard this year; indeed, there are many folks who had a hard time swallowing their pride and asking for help in the first place. CFS takes money raised and buys presents for children served by the agency. Here's my own editorial slant to the argument I've heard that the holidays aren't about the presents: After spending the last 9 years working closely with the folks at Child and Family Services, I have learned that more often than not, those kids are asking for such basic stuff like shoes and coats. NOT the latest video game or gadget! How many stuffed animals do your kids have strewn about their rooms? Some of the kids served by CFS don't even have one teddy bear to keep them company when they have to go to bed alone, because their mom is out working her third job to make ends meet. And even 15 year olds need a hand to hold onto every now and again....
OK, so I have your attention now...how can you help? Tune into our radio broadcast Thurs 12/6 and Fri 12/7 from 9 to 6. You'll be able to call in and pledge any amount of money - or, you can stop bmy the Mall of NH in Manchester and say hello to your WZID radio personalities before you donate. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Happy '07 Thanksgiving!
Hope you join our little family here at WZID as you and your family prepare for your holiday feast! I don't know how, when, or why Mike and I started our traditional "Spaghettios in the Morning" ritual, but we'll crack open a can of the orange-sauced, slightly metal tasting treat sometime during our morning show on Thanksgiving. Hold the meatballs and the weinies, please! What the heck is IN those meatballs, anyways? Once, a meatball rolled off my son's high chair and onto the floor (sounding like a kid's nursery rhyme, huh?) and I picked it up and washed it off. I don't know why, because at the time I had three hungry dogs who obviously were asleep....but when you wash the orange sauce off, all that remains is a weird, bumpy, GRAY rubber ball! And I was feeding this to my KID?!?!?! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Halloween 2007
So LAST year's blog entry was this: "Oct 31 footnote:
I made it through the entire day without hearing "The Monster Mash" AND " Thriller". Life is good :)" Mikey went and blew it already this morning. Just after 7 am, he launches our very popular contest "So You Think You can Sing?" and announces that he wanted someone to call in and sing THE MONSTER MASH. I know, I know, its such a Halloween tradition, how can I NOT like it??? Truth be told, I am not a huge fan of Halloween. Much like the commercialization of other holidays, I cringe when I see big, blow-up monsters tethered to the front lawns of cookie-cutter homes. What exactly is this celebrating? It's not scary - except perhaps the amount of money spent on ghoulish plastic decorations. I have two small, sort of pathetic looking pumpkins on my porch steps. But ya know what? We grew them in our garden this year, and the fact that they grew as large as they did is kinda scary...!

SOX SWEEP THE WORLD SERIES...
....and now I don't have to staple a poster to my shirt anymore. Hallelluja.
|
Still wearing the photo...
Yah, the Sox won another one last night...today's Friday, and here I am with a newspaper photostapled to my sweatshirt again. It's getting pretty dog-eared; hope the Sox sweep as I don't think it will last much into next week! Mikey's doing his part by wearing his Manny jersey again - sure hope he washes it over the weekend.
|
I am responsible for Pedroia's homer.
So, yesterday, I stapled a cut-out photo of Dustin Pedroia from the Nashua Telegraph onto my shirt, in an effort to show my Red Sox spirit. So, the guy goes on to smack a lead-off home run in last night's game. So now, I am stuck wearing this darn picture, till the end of the World Series. Why? Because Mikey says so. I could refuse, but since Mike is wearing his Manny Ramirez jersey again, I guess I will be a team player, sit on my bench (actually, its a stool in the studio) and suck it up. Today's shirt is a denim button-down, and Pedroia's mitts are stapled to the chest pockets. ;)
|
Red Sox fever!
So, tonight's the first game of the World Series! I don't own any Red Sox attire (neither does Mike Ellis, as I just found out) so to show my team spirit, I cut out a picture of Justin Pedroia from today's Nashua Telegraph and stapled it to the front of my shirt. Mike Morin tells me that Pedroia was a good catch for the team; he says he's a little guy who's probably not much bigger than me. Apparently this little dynamo plays second base, and is darn good at it. So, as a kid in middle school, my big brush with organized sports came in the form of a season playing softball. I sat on the bench a lot. :( I thought it was boring. Do the players on the Sox who have to sit on the bench get bored, too? Or are they calculating how much money they are getting paid to sit around on their butts? At least they have that; when I was a bench warmer for softball, all I could think about was how I wanted to be anywhere but there!
|
Fall weekend stuff
WOW. That about sums up my recent leaf-peeping expedition to Western Mass. Actually, it was a bonus trip, as the purpose was not specifically to see the foliage, but to go visit my relatives. Just so happens that the roads of choice for Wolf and I are definately the ones off the beaten track. And we were not disappointed! This year's foliage show is one of the best, so take advantage of some leaf-peeping wherever you go - even if its a short trip to the store, you can't help but notice the gorgeous colors!

Roasting pumpkin seeds
I wasn't sure how long to cook pumpkin seeds, so I went on-line and found out something that I hadn't heard before: you should dry out the seeds overnight before baking them. So, I did that, laid them out in a pan and air-dried overnight, then put them in a 200-degree oven for an hour. Oh, first, you should toss them with some cooking spray, or a light coating of olive oil, then cover with salt! Can't have too much salt! Anyways, after an hour, they were perfect. It definately was worth drying them overnight first!

9/07 Back from vacation!
The best thing about being on vacation was that I didn't have to get up and listen to myself on the radio :) We had a blast, travelling around NH and Maine in the RV and taking advantage of some awesome weather. The M/S Mt Washington cruise, the Lost River, Ruggles Mine, and home-cooking from Maine were some of the highlights from "Summer Vacation 2007".

Whatcha think? Not a bad look after 5 days of camping?!
|
Mikey had this for dinner

So....what is Mike doing on vacation this week? He is sending me pictures of weird corn that he is eating! I sure hope vacation next week finds us doing something a little more...ahem...exciting :)

Golf!
We did a little family outing on the golf course over the weekend, and judging from the way my son whacked golf balls, I think another golfer has been born. Eleven is a great age to start the sometimes-maddening game of golf - just think of all those times he'll find himself rooting around for his ball in the woods and wondering "why the hell did I ever take up this game, anyways?" OHHH, thanks, mom!!! :) Special thanks to Jim for having the patience and skill to keep him interested all the way through nine holes. Looks like there could be a new set of clubs under the Christmas tree this year!

Aug 13, 2007 The Garden
We've been swimming in a sea of cucumbers in the garden, and now the cukes are swimming in a sea of brine!
Over the past couple of weeks, the ridiculous crop of pickling cukes exploded in the garden, but I gotta say that the squash, beans and peas have given them a run for their money. Honestly, I was crawling on my hands and knees yesterday through the jungle while Wolf directed me to the goods. And no matter how many times we checked out a vine and deemed it "picked", we'd look back and see another one that we missed. The upshot of all this work though will be cracking open the bazillion jars of pickles in about 6 weeks. I'm math-challenged, but we're up over several dozen quarts, and a dozen half-gallons. Anyone have a good cold-process pickling recipe for pea pods? If you do, please email me at nancyrobbins@wzid.com THANKS!

Aug 6, 2007 the family evolves...
There's a few new "kids" in the family, and one really is a "kid"! A goat kid, but he sounds like a little baby when looking for attention. Most of the time it sounds to me like he's calling "daaaad", which I find amusing. When my boyfriend walks away from him, and he starts bleating away, I can say "see, he's calling YOU!" Anyways, the baby goat doesn't have a name...yet...but those long, floppy ears that stick out on the side of his head like a car with both doors open remind me of the Flying Nun. And then there's New Pet #2: Sqeaky the Kitty. On Saturday, my son and I went over to the Animal Rescue League in Bedford and he quickly found his new pal, an 8-week old black and grey striped kitten, aptly named for the squeaky meow that she eeks out. So, Squeaky now has run of the ranch; just waiting for her now to prove herself as the mouser I hope she will be! The ARL, as well as the Humane Society of Nashua, and many other local animal shelters, are over-capacity with cats and kittens. Please adopt one of those animals and give them a good home - in return, they'll give you a lifetime of love and devotion.

July 24, 2007 I fell off the wagon.
The hay wagon, that is :-) Sunday was a great day to package up a few hundred bales of hay (OK, it was a great day for just about anything outdoors, too!) So just a quick little misstep off the hay trailer and WHOOPS....there I found myself, sitting on my arse on the ground. I was reasoning outloud (like the birds and the bugs around me would care to listen) that if my foot were broken, I most likely would be crying - which I was not. So with that encourangement, I stood up and put some of my weight on it. Of course, it's my right foot....right? The pain was bearable, and fortunately, it distracted me enough to forget about tennis elbow flaring up in my right arm. Bonus for me, my boyfriend went overboard in packing the lunch cooler with every type of ice pack in his freezer, including those squishy gel ones that are made for life's little tragedies. So, I sat and munched on my lunch, and watched everyone else do the heavy lifting. A day off from the airwaves courtesy of Ed, and being doted on by my boyfriend (OK, so he did everything, including piggy-back rides up the stairs and all of the barn chores) and I am back to work today - I just won't be hitting the golf links this afternoon!
|
July 19, 2007 Dustin joins our family!
So, last week, my boyfriend took the big leap into horse-dom...he bought a huge, leggy gelding named "Dustin". Dustin had an interesting start to his new life on the ranch with Nugget, the jealous mini-horse! Wow, she turned into devil-child for a time there! She wouldn't let him near anyone, horse or human...nor would she let anyone go near him. But now they are pretty tight; she is sharing her hay with him, and May just stands there and licks his shoulder, all doey-eyed over her new friend. And I am extremely impressed with how easily my boyfriend has taken to riding...he's a natural...dammit...much to the chagrin of those who feel like a sack of potatoes balancing on a high-wire when they first sit on a horse!

Dustin chillin' at the lake!

July 12, 2007 Back from Vacation!
Having the Fouth of July in the middle of the week was strange; it was good that I was off all week as everything seemed out of sync. I love vacations when I really have to stop and think about what day it is! Uhhh, derrrr, is today Tuesday or Thursday? And does it really matter? One fun day rolled into the next, as I started out on my parents boat in upstate NY, then rolled into days of golfing with my boyfriend, movies with my son, driving around Vermont, Massachusetts and NH, off to the beach (so what, it was raining, but that's the beauty of an RV!) It's good to be back at work...except for that annoying 3:30 am alarm! Ahh, well, the work of a diva is never done :)

July 2, 2007 Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday, Wolf!! 143 ;-)

May 29, 2007 Please Remember what Memorial Day is really about
Memorial Day weekend will soon become just a memory as we head into the heat of summer. Hopefully, though, the thousands of Americans who lost their lives will never become just a memory, but instead will continue to be honored for what they gave. Whether you support our current war or not, I think it is important to let those who lost loved ones know that their nation is behind them.

May 25, 2007 Gnawing grass....
Hey...summertime is here (at least in my own little world) because I mowed my lawn for the first time this season. It was a bit of tough going, as it really should have been mowed a week ago...but, the mower performed well, gnawing through the tall grass and windfall branches. I do have quite a bit less area to mow; and that's credit to my boyfriend, who engineered the plan to expand the area that the four-legged lawn mowers cut down themselves. The horses are very efficient in munching away at the grass that used to take me an hour to mow in the orchard area. They're happy, I'm happy, and despite single-handidly yanking out brush, brambles, and saplings by the millions, I think my boyfriend is happy with the outcome...at least he gets the last word in when I ask him about it...it's always "yes, dear." Isn't it nice to have a relationship that is so balanced? ;-)
