The plot revolves around a German girl named Clara. Clara is at a Christmas Eve party, celebrating with her friends and family, when her mysterious godfather enters. He has gifts for all the children. He gives Clara a nutcracker, who is in the traditional shape of a soldier in full parade uniform. Clara is overjoyed, but her brother Fritz is jealous and breaks the nutcracker. The party ends and everyone goes to bed. While everyone is sleeping, Clara's godfather fixes the nutcracker. Clara sneaks downstairs in the middle of the night to see her nutcracker, and when the clock strikes midnight, she hears the sound of mice. She tries to runaway, but the mice stop her. Then the Christmas tree gets bigger and bigger! The nutcracker then comes to life and he and his band of soldiers rise to defend Clara. The Mouse King leads his mice to battle, but Clara helps the nutcracker by throwing her shoe at the Mouse King. The nutcracker then seizes his opportunity and stabs the Mouse King, killing him. The rest of the mice retreat, taking their dead leader with them. The nutcracker then transforms into a prince. Clara and the prince travel to a world where dancing snowflakes greet them and fairies and queens dance, welcoming Clara and the prince into their world. Clara and the prince arrive at the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. She and the people of the Land of Sweets dance for Clara and the prince in the dances of the Dew Drop Fairy, the Spanish dancers, the Chinese dancers, the Arabian dancers, the Russian dancers, Mother Ginger and her Polichinelles, the Reed Flutes, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Waltz of the Flowers. After the festivities, Clara wakes up under the Christmas tree with the nutcracker toy in her arms.
