MANCHESTER, N.H.- The Auburn, Candia and Weare police departments are on tap to receive federal funding through agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to assist with immigration enforcement.
The funding provided through ICE’s 287(g) program, is meant to help cover expenses, like vehicles, equipment and technology, while authorizing trained officers to perform certain immigration enforcement duties under federal supervision.
Supporters say the agreements provide needed resources and strengthen public safety, while critics warn they could undermine community trust and divert local police from other responsibilities.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire twenty-nine departments including New Hampshire State are part of the program.
