CONCORD, N.H.- Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed two pieces of legislation into law Tuesday, one of which allows for universal access to Education Freedom Accounts, the other creates a new Parental Bill of Rights in education.
Under the new law parents interested will be able to use a taxpayer-funded Education Freedom Account to help pay for their child’s education, while the Parental Bill of Rights will give parents additional access to information about their kids when working with educators.
Speaking before legislators, advocates for education choice and school kids on Tuesday Ayotte talked about how both bills will put the state on the right track for education reform and give New Hampshire families more choices.
“Giving parents the freedom to choose the education setting that best fits their child’s needs will help every student in our state reach their full potential”.
Opponents meanwhile contend that both bills will do more harm than good to public schools, noting that the EFA legislation adds another estimated $17 million a year to a program that already costs taxpayers $30 million a year. And critics of the Parental Rights bill say it could make things harder for educators to report cases of suspected child abuse to authorities.
