CONCORD, N.H.- A Connecticut man has been denied bail for his alleged role in a scam which resulted in an elderly man in New Hampshire spending millions on gold bars.

According to court documents Ji Li of Middletown Connecticut was ordered held without bail Monday following his arraignment on a felony charge of conspiracy to commit theft by deception for posing as a Microsoft security fraud specialist, a bank fraud specialist and a Federal Reserve system officer and convinced the 72-year-old victim to purchase $3.1 million in gold.

Authorities say Li told the victim his computer had been hacked, and his personal information had been compromised after the man called a number that showed up in a pop-up ad with Li telling the man he should buy the gold to protect himself.

From there officials say the 41-year-old forced the victim to purchase gold bars on three separate occasions between February and May, which were picked up four different times before he was arrested on May 12th.

Following Monday’s arraignment Li remains in custody after the judge raised concern over whether or not Li posed a flight risk.
