New Hampshire Attorney General Issues Warning Regarding Latest Text Scam

A person uses a cell phone on Saturday, July 13, 2024, in Los Angeles. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center reports that SIM-swapping complaints have increased more than 400% from 2018 to 2021. New federal regulations aimed at preventing port-out hijacking are under review, but it's not clear how far they will go in stopping the crime. CONCORD, N.H.-Authorities are warning of the latest scam making the rounds, targeting residents in the Granite State.

Officials from the State’s Attorney General’s office said on Monday they received reports of someone claiming to be from the New Hampshire Department of Motor Vehicles who was asking for a payment via text for an alleged unpaid traffic violation, through a link, and said if they don’t pay their license will be suspended.

Investigators said the DMV never sends text messages regarding license suspensions, unpaid violations or requests payment of any type. Those who receive these messages should not respond and instead contact your local police department or the Attorney General’s office.
