The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announces that they will be changing the prevailing northbound Route 1A traffic patterns in Hampton beginning Thursday May 27th, 2020 through Labor Day, September 7th 2020.

This work is expected to be completed late Thursday afternoon and the new configuration will result in northbound Route 1A (Ocean Blvd) traffic being detoured to Ashworth Ave using O Street and then returned to Ocean Blvd near Nudd Avenue.

These changes are being implemented in accordance with Governor Sununu’s Stay at Home 2.0 Emergency Order and the Seacoast Beach reopening on June 1, 2020. As such this is a collaborative effort between The Town of Hampton, NH, New Hampshire Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of State Parks, and New Hampshire Department of Transportation. The closure of Ocean Boulevard to vehicles will provide for a wider walking mall to allow individuals to properly socially distance.

Beginning on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 6:00 am the southbound right lane of Ashworth Avenue spanning from O Street to Nudd Avenue will be closed for signs, pavement markings and traffic channelization devices to be installed. Once this work is completed, traffic will be shifted to the right and the left lane will be closed for sign changes to transform Ashworth Ave into a two-way roadway.

NHDOT will also be installing changeable message signs and barrels to warn motorist of the new traffic pattern. Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution as they adjust to changes in the road configuration.

In conjunction with the NHDOT Ashworth Avenue traffic reconfiguration work, the Town of Hampton will be installing barrier to close off access to Ocean Blvd, Route 1A from the Letter Streets. When all work is complete the closure of Ocean Blvd with associated detour will be implemented.

Questions regarding Town of Hampton operations may be directed to Deputy Chief David Hobbs of Hampton Police Department. Questions regarding NH Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of NH State Parks parking operations may be directed to Brent Wucher, Public Information Officer.
